Oman, Against All Odds

Date

October 2012

Location

Muscat, Oman

What was supposed to be a straightforward business trip to open a Shakespeare and Co. branch at The Wave in Muscat turned into a full-on road movie - complete with visa drama, border disbelief, and a tire that had no business surviving 900+ km of desert highway. Apparently, driving a Mercedes while being Asian raised eyebrows at the UAE/Oman border (because you know, they think I should be working at McDonalds and riding the bus), and my wife’s visa process wasn’t exactly a warm welcome.

But we made it. And Oman? Absolutely stunning. Verdant in ways the UAE rarely is, peaceful, humble, and refreshingly underhyped. I didn’t have much time to explore, and yes, my photography skills were barely past “auto mode,” but we captured a few gems between meetings and mad dashes across Muscat.

Oh, and did I mention the bum tire we had to replace with a secondhand one during Eid, when every shop was closed? We rolled back to Dubai in one piece - tired, grateful, and once again reminded that God carries us through every bump in the road (literally and spiritually).
