Italy 2013 | A Road Trip Through Dreams, History and a Few Perfect Surprises!

Location

Venice, Florence, Rome, Vatican City and Milan

Date

July 2013

Our second European road trip took us on an unforgettable journey through the very best of Italy. We crossed the Austrian Alps, weathered a spectacular thunderstorm in the Dolomites, and eventually arrived in Venice, where two lifelong dreams quietly converged. As a child, I had promised myself that one day I would return with the woman I would marry. Years later, I found myself fulfilling not only that childhood promise, but also my wife's own dream of experiencing the beauty and romance of Italy for the very first time. Watching her step onto a gondola in Venice remains one of the most memorably moments of our travels together.

From there we continued to Florence, where Renaissance history and timeless architecture reminded us why Italy has inspired artists, dreamers, and travelers for centuries. Rome was the destination I had anticipated most, having spent much of my childhood fascinated by the Roman Empire. Standing before the Colosseum, wandering through the Roman Forum, and exploring Vatican City felt like stepping into the pages of the history books I grew up reading.

One final surprise awaited in Pisa. My wife believed we were heading home, completely unaware that the Leaning Tower had secretly been part of my itinerary all along. Seeing her reaction made every kilometer worthwhile, and climbing its famous spiral staircase became the perfect ending to another unforgettable adventure. We concluded our journey in Milan before driving through the spectacular Swiss Alps back to Munich, grateful for a road trip that was never simply about visiting famous landmarks, but about fulfilling promises, sharing dreams, and creating memories that have only grown more precious with the passage of time...
