Winter Wonderland 2014 | A Birthday Wrapped in Snow!

Location

Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria
Zermatt, The Swiss Alps, Switzerland

Date

January 2014

Our third European adventure was built around one simple goal: to give my wife the birthday she had always dreamed of. Having never experienced a true European winter together, I secretly planned another surprise getaway, revealing nothing beyond my usual instruction: "Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride."

After arriving in Munich, we made our way to the fairytale village of Hohenschwangau, where my surprise was waiting. As Neuschwanstein Castle emerged from the darkness, illuminated beneath the winter sky, my wife instantly recognised it as Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. Watching her reaction on the eve of her birthday was a gift in itself. The following morning, as snow gently began to fall, we rode a horse-drawn carriage up to the castle, creating what remains one of the most magical birthdays we have ever celebrated. It felt as though God Himself had painted the perfect backdrop.

From Bavaria we continued into the heart of the Swiss Alps, staying in the quiet village of Täsch before making our way to the legendary mountain town of Zermatt. My final surprise was the Matterhorn, a mountain my wife had dreamed of seeing for years, inspired by her favourite Toblerone chocolate. Nature, however, had other plans. Despite crystal-clear skies, the summit remained hidden behind a blanket of cloud. Yet somehow, the disappointment never came. Instead, we watched her make her very first snow angel, shared cheese fondue high in the Alps, and stood together surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery we had ever witnessed.

Sometimes the most unforgettable journeys are not defined by the landmarks we came to see, but by the moments we never planned. This trip reminded us that the greatest gifts are rarely found at the destination, but in the memories God creates along the way.
