Land of the Pharaohs 2015 | Where 5,000 years of History Still Breathes
Location
Cairo, Egypt
Date
March 2015
- While most people know us as movie lovers, history has always been another passion we share. And what do you get when you combine a lifelong fascination with ancient civilizations, a healthy dose of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and three decades of anticipation? None other than the once-great civilization of Egypt!
After postponing the trip for years, we finally stood before the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx, monuments we had admired in books and documentaries since childhood. No photograph can prepare you for the sheer scale of these ancient wonders. Standing before them, you can't help but marvel at what mankind was capable of over 4,500 years ago without the marvels of modern technology we enjoy today.
Yet Egypt offered us far more than its legendary monuments. Cairo captivated us with its warmth, character, and unmistakable soul. We immersed ourselves in thousands of years of history while discovering the incredible hospitality of the Egyptian people, sampling authentic local favorites like koshary and mulukhiyah at the famed Abou Tarek, and wandering a city where ancient civilization and modern life coexist in remarkable harmony.
It may not possess the polished glamour of some of the world's great capitals (though we did have the privilege of enjoying the stellar hospitality of The Four Seasons hotel!), but Egypt offers something far rarer: authenticity. It is a country that proudly embraces its extraordinary past while steadily writing its future. Our visit may have been brief, but it only deepened our desire to return one day to explore Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, Alexandria, and Sharm El Sheikh. Some destinations satisfy your curiosity. Egypt simply leaves you wanting more.
