The City That Never Sleeps 2014 | Dreams, Skylines & Lifelong Passions

Location

New York City

Date

April 2014

By April 2014, one final destination remained on our shared bucket list: New York City. After years of putting personal dreams behind career ambitions, we finally found ourselves standing in the city that had captivated us both for so long. From the bright lights of Times Square and the energy of Harlem where we chose to stay for our tenure, to ferry rides across New York Harbor, every day felt like another chapter in a story we had waited years to write.

Standing before the Statue of Liberty and visiting Ellis Island was a deeply humbling experience. More than iconic landmarks, they represented hope, opportunity, and the dreams of millions who had crossed those same waters in search of a better life. It was impossible not to leave with a renewed appreciation for courage, sacrifice, and freedom.

For me, the trip also became the fulfillment of several lifelong passions. As a devoted Yankees fan since childhood, finally watching the Yankees face the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium was surreal. Just days later, another dream came true as I watched my beloved New York Knicks play at the legendary Madison Square Garden, a venue I had aspired to visit since I watched my first Knicks playoff game in 1993. As an avid sneaker collector, wandering New York's famous sneaker boutiques was already a treat - but being able to design my own one-of-one Nike Bespoke Air Force 1s at 21 Mercer made the journey feel like a pilgrimage as much as a vacation!

But, as always, the most memorable moments revolved around my wife. Throughout the trip I kept one final surprise hidden from her. Although she had dreamed of visiting the Empire State Building, I deliberately convinced her we had run out of time (a ruse she keeps falling for!). Only when we reached the entrance did I reveal that I had secretly purchased Express Passes weeks earlier. Watching her face light up as we soared to the observation deck and looked out across Manhattan together remains one of my favorite travel memories. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable week in the city where dreams, old and new, somehow feel entirely possible...
